“My portraits are more about me than they are about the people I photograph.” ~Richard Avedon.
When you take a picture you're taking a picture of something you enjoy. Whether its a person doing something you enjoy or dressed in something you love to wear. A photographer won't direct someone to so something they think looks bad and doesn't like. They place them in away they enjoy seeing them in. For example in the television show Americas Next Top Model, each week a different photographer comes in and directs a different photo shoot for them to do. If you notice closely, the shoot is always very different and the photographer is always extremely excited to take the photos. When someone views a photo of a person its not all about the person. The viewer, or at least me, thinks about where the photographer was coming from and what they were trying to accomplish.
The colors and direction of the subject is dependent on the photographer and this is what Avedon is trying to dictate.
